Do we really need a double vanity in the primary bathroom?
Only if two people genuinely use the vanity at the same time. The double sink is the most requested specification in primary bath renovations and, in many households, the least used: a 72-inch double vanity with two 16-inch basins leaves just 20 inches of counter between the sinks and 8 inches at each end—inadequate for real grooming and cosmetic organization. A 48-inch single vanity with a centered basin leaves 16 inches of usable counter on each side. Because supply and drain rough-ins are fixed once walls and floors close, we resolve the sink count from your actual morning routine before plumbing begins.
What does a steam shower actually require behind the walls?
More than most clients expect. The enclosure must be fully sealed with a steam-rated door and threshold, the ceiling must slope at least 2 degrees so condensation runs off rather than dripping onto the occupant, and the walls and ceiling must be waterproofed to full height, not just the lower shower zone. The generator needs a dedicated 240V circuit, a water supply line, and a drain connection, all positioned in the adjacent wall during rough-in, and it is sized at roughly 1 KW per 50 cubic feet, adjusted for heat-absorbing glass and stone. Effective therapeutic sessions run 15-20 minutes. All of this is planned before tile, never after.
Is a jetted tub worth it, or is a soaking tub the better choice?
For most clients, the deep soaking tub wins. Jetted tubs are used far less than their owners expect: the jets require weekly cleaning to prevent mold and biofilm in the pump and jet assembly—a task most people perform once and then abandon—and the motor noise works against the meditative quiet most people want from a bath. For clients genuinely committed to hydrotherapy as a regular practice, a quality jetted tub is a valid choice. For everyone else, a deep freestanding soaker without jets is simpler, quieter, easier to maintain, and more visually resolved, while still giving the room its sculptural focal point.
Which faucet finishes hold up best in a bathroom used every day?
A primary bathroom sees roughly 730 uses per occupant per year, so finish durability matters as much as appearance. Polished chrome is the most consistently durable plated finish under daily water exposure, though it shows spots and fingerprints; brushed nickel is the safest balance of spot-hiding texture and long-term durability. Unlacquered brass develops a living patina—beautiful to clients who want that character, disappointing to those who expect day-one appearance a decade later. Can we use marble on the vanity top and bathroom floor?
Use marble selectively. Daily contact with cosmetics, hair products, toothpaste, and cleaning agents is chemistry marble does not handle well, so we specify honed quartzite or quartz for the vanity top and reserve marble for the tub surround or a feature wall, where contact is infrequent and the material’s character justifies its maintenance. On floors, large-format porcelain is the most durable, lowest-maintenance choice—it never needs sealing and does not absorb moisture—while natural stone floors require annual sealing in a bathroom that sees daily water and can etch from acidic cleaners.
